A rich layered cake filled with caramel and topped with frosting.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel sauce)
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (for caramel sauce)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for caramel sauce)
- 1 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk (for frosting)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
- 1/2 cup crushed cookies or graham crackers (for garnish)
- Extra caramel sauce for drizzle
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- Combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture, and mix well.
- Stir in the milk until the batter is smooth.
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
- Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar until it becomes a deep amber color.
- Stir in the butter until melted and bubbly.
- Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring. Be careful as it may splatter.
- Let the mixture boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Allow the caramel to cool before using.
- In a large bowl, cream the butter until smooth.
- Gradually beat in the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until the frosting is light and fluffy.
- Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top.
- Drizzle some caramel sauce over the frosting.
- Repeat the layering process with the remaining cake layers.
- Cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting.
- Pour extra caramel sauce over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
- Sprinkle crushed cookies or graham crackers on top for added texture.
Notes
- Ensure the cake has completely cooled before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
- For an extra rich flavor, use dark brown sugar in the caramel sauce.
- If the caramel hardens too much, gently warm it up before drizzling over the cake.
