Description

A rich layered cake filled with caramel and topped with frosting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel sauce)
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (for caramel sauce)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for caramel sauce)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1/2 cup crushed cookies or graham crackers (for garnish)
  • Extra caramel sauce for drizzle

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture, and mix well.
  5. Stir in the milk until the batter is smooth.
  6. Divide the batter evenly among the prepared pans.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
  8. Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar until it becomes a deep amber color.
  10. Stir in the butter until melted and bubbly.
  11. Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring. Be careful as it may splatter.
  12. Let the mixture boil for 1 minute. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  13. Allow the caramel to cool before using.
  14. In a large bowl, cream the butter until smooth.
  15. Gradually beat in the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  16. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of frosting on top.
  17. Drizzle some caramel sauce over the frosting.
  18. Repeat the layering process with the remaining cake layers.
  19. Cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting.
  20. Pour extra caramel sauce over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.
  21. Sprinkle crushed cookies or graham crackers on top for added texture.

Notes

  • Ensure the cake has completely cooled before frosting to prevent the frosting from melting.
  • For an extra rich flavor, use dark brown sugar in the caramel sauce.
  • If the caramel hardens too much, gently warm it up before drizzling over the cake.
